Oily Skin Care Cleanser with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acid

Alpha Beta Hydroxy Acid Ingredients: Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid.

Glycolic Acid & Lactic Acid. These two natural acids are also known as Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). They are naturally occurring acids, derived from sugars in particular plants or in milk. Some examples are Glycolic Acid (Sugar Cane), Lactic Acid (Milk), Tartaric Acid (Grapes), Citric Acid (Citrus Fruits), Malic Acid (Apples), and Mandelic Acid (Bitter Almonds).

These acids work at the very base of the stratum corneum, dissolving the cement that holds dead skin cells together. This allows for an increase in cell turnover and influences the structure of new stratum corneum being made.

Salicylic acid works from the uppermost layer of the skin, dissolving skin layer by layer.

Salicylic acid is the chemical compound with the formula C6H4(OH)CO2H, where the OH group is adjacent to the carboxylic acid group. This colorless crystalline organic acid is widely used in organic synthesis and functions as a plant hormone. It is probably best known as a compound that is chemically similar but not identical to the active component of aspirin. The name derives from the latin word for the willow tree (Salix), from whose bark it can be obtained.

Also known as beta hydroxy acid (compare to AHA), salicylic acid is the key additive in many skin-care products for the treatment of acne, psoriasis, callouses, corns, keratosis pilaris and warts. It treats acne by causing skin cells to slough off more readily, preventing pores from clogging up. This effect on skin cells also makes salicylic acid an active ingredient in several shampoos meant to treat dandruff. Use of straight salicylic solution may cause hyperpigmentation on unpretreated skin for those with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick phototypes IV, V, VI), as well as with the lack of use of a broad spectrum sunblock.

The facial cleanser also contains Camphor. This is a natural ingredient extracted from wood of the camphor laurel (Cinnamonum camphora), a large evergreen tree found in Asia (particularly in Borneo) and some other related trees in the laurel family, notably Ocotea usambarensis. Camphor is readily absorbed through the skin and produces a feeling of cooling similar to that of menthol and acts as slight local anesthesic and antimicrobial substance.

The cleanser also contains a little Phenol, which is an organic chemical of the formula C6H5OH. Its structure is that of a hydroxyl group (-OH) bonded to a phenyl ring; it is thus an aromatic compound. It has antiseptic and anesthesic properties.

Glycolic acid, the most common alpha hydroxy acid found in cosmetic preparations, is popular mainly because that is the alpha hydroxy acid that has been the most widely studied. The small molecular structure and the rapid penetration of glycolic acid make it the most irritating of the group. The possibility of irritation make glycolic acid more suitable for those with mature or non-sensitive skin. Those with oilier skin types often prefer glycolic acid sinks it sinks into the skin quickly. The widespread use of glycolic acid, though, gives the consumer flexibility on the formula. The consumer has a wide range of choices with glycolic acid products: gels, serums, lotions, creams, formulas at varying pH's and concentrations, for that contain a variety of other age-fighting ingredients. If a person wants to find a cream that contains both AHAs and vitamin C, they will have a good chance of finding a glycolic acid formulation that does.

Lactic acid is most often found in moisturizers due to its more moisturizing properties. Lactic acid is a natural humectant that draws and holds water in the upper layers of the skin. Alpha hydroxy acids as a whole can increase the skin's ability to trap water due to an increased production of natural skin moisturizers (hyaluronic acid), but lactic acid's extra humectant properties make it even more ideal for treating dry skin. Lactic acid's larger molecule size makes it less irritating than glycolic acid. Also, because lactic acid is naturally found in the human body, it is not likely to cause an allergic reaction in those with reactive skin. Lactic Acid is ideal for those with slightly sensitive, dry skin or allergy-prone skin.

The great advantage of oily skin is that it ages at a slower rate than other skin types. 

Oily skin needs special cleansing with plenty of hot water and soap to prevent the pores from being clogged. Avoid harsh products that strip your skin of oil and encourage flakiness. They can cause a reaction known as reactive seborrhoea, where the oil glands work overtime to compensate for the loss of natural oils.

Avoid skincare products that leave your skin feeling taut and dehydrated. They cause the upper layers of the skin to shrink. This restricts oil flow through the pores leading to blockages and breakouts. 

To cleanse oily skin, opt for oil-free moisturizers to maintain a shine-free complexion.

Keep your skin very clean. Limit washing your face to two or three times a day. Too much washing will stimulate your skin to produce more oil.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are ideal for use with other products since they can enhance the penetration of ingredients into the skin.

Other Ingredients: Deionized water, Neopentylglycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Tridecyl trimellitate, Polyacrylamide, Iso-paraffine, Laureth-7, Camphor.

Neopentylglycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate and Tridecyl trimellitate: are both organic chemicals used as emollients and thickening agents.

Polyacrylamide: basic type of material used to make gels.

Iso-paraffine. It is a branched-chain alkalene. An alkane in organic chemistry is a saturated hydrocarbon without cycles, having the general formula C n H 2n + 2, that is, an acyclic hydrocarbon in which the molecule has the maximum possible number of hydrogen atoms and so has no double bonds. Function: it combines or dissolves in lipids (superficial skin fats).

Laureth-7: An organic chemical obtained by modification of lauric acid, a natural fatty acid, and oxirane (ethylene oxide). Function: Emulsifier / Surfactant

Preservatives: Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Diet for Oily Skin

Take a diet rich in proteins but restricted in sugar, fluids and salt. Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits. Drink plenty of quality water to keep the skin hydrated and flush out toxins.

Have your blood brought up to par by the suitable administration of necessary vitamins, iron and similar substances.

Even a slight deficiency in vitamin B2 can cause oily skin. Nutritional yeast, wheat germ and organ meats provide both vitamin B5 and vitamin B2. Other good sources of vitamin B2 are whole grains, beans, nuts, and royal jelly. Buckwheat, black beans and whole rice are excellent to supply the body with iron and rejuvenate pate skin.

Reduce the amount of fat in your diet. Avoid pork and fried and highly seasoned foods. Consume no animal fats, or heat-processed vegetable oils. 

Do not cook with oil. Do not eat any oils that have been subjected to heat, whether in processing or cooking. If a little oil is necessary, such as in salad dressing, use cold-pressed canola or olive oil only.

Do not drink soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. Avoid sugar, chocolate, and junk food.
