Skin darkening occurs in the epidermis -the outer skin layer- when too much melanin (the substance that colors the skin) is produced, and forms deposits in the skin. To get rid of hyperpigmentation or melasma a process of skin renewal must be launched and sustained for some time (2 to 4 months). Then to avoid re-occurrence hyperpigmentation must be prevented by a NO-SUN plan: avoid sun exposure at all costs! This means both UVA and UVB, true broad spectrum SPF 30 daily.

Melasma is caused either by natural processes -an increased production of melanin to protect the skin from the sun-, or because of external interventions, such as estrogen supplements, birth control pills, or altered hormonal production during pregnancy, or cellular hypersensitivity to normal estrogen levels, if at the same time there is high sun exposure.

There are several products in the market that claim to lighten the skin affected by melasma or hiperpigmentation. They contend to work by both slowing down the production of melanin pigment in the skin and getting rid of melanin deposits. As less and less melanin is produced, and as the already darkened skin is peeled off by the action of glycolic acid, darkened skin gradually fades to match normal skin.

Most products combine glycolic acid with the chemical hydroquinone to lighten the skin, for the latter acts as a skin bleaching agent.
