Adult Acne - Hormone Imbalances Play A Role

by Daniel Wright

Teenagers are often told that the unsightly pimples of adolescence are a normal phase of growing up and that they will clear up on their own. Even some dermatologists will advise the afflicted teen that they will have clear skin naturally after the teen years are over.

For some people, these blemishes are slightly more recurring. For others, they don't begin to appear until adulthood. Sometimes it is a result of the hormonal changes that come with pregnancy, sometimes there is no reason at all. Some ways to prevent acne are to use skin care products, evaluate and change your diet, and even medication. However, those can only ease the embarrassment and discomfort of adult acne; for some people these methods do not help.

Many people assume that adult acne is the result of poor hygiene and being unclean. This is a myth. In reality, some soaps can actually increase the severity of break-outs. But do not despair; Adult acne, like teenage acne, can be treated.

It is important to remember that there is no universal treatment that works for everyone. Each person has different skin and may react differently. It may take some experimentation with a different skin care product or regimen to find a routine that works for you. With a little effort most people will find a system that clears their skin of acne.

A number of discussion forums and support groups exist on the Internet. These can serve as a medium through which people who suffer acne can find others who are experience the same problems, and from which they can share stories and receive coping tips. Within social circles, people with acne sometimes feel isolated because they get discriminated against. Through links built on the Internet, they become aware that they are not alone.

Eventually you may need to be treated by a dermatologist if none of the options available at home have ameliorated the problem. A good specialist will advise you on which medical treatments will be most effective in dealing with your skin condition.

Regardless of how long eradicating the problem may take, remember that acne is not something that should cause you to be ashamed or embarrassed. More likely, other people will not pay attention to your skin as often as you may think that they do. Having some self confidence will go a long way to improve your appearance regardless of your skin condition.
